Knight is Co-Publisher, Editor-in-Chief and business partner in Hatton-Brown Publishers, Inc., a privately held company founded in 1948 and based in Montgomery, Alabama. Hatton-Brown dominates the forest products publishing field with the titles Timber Harvesting, Southern Loggin’ Times, Timber Processing, Panel World and Wood Bioenergy. The company also publishes two magazines not related to the forest products industry.

In addition to leading the corporation's editorial team and helping plan and execute the editorial menu, Knight helps manage the business and is an occasional writer and columnist. He became co-publisher and editor-in-chief for Hatton-Brown in 1981. He joined the company in 1968 after a four-year career in newspaper journalism.

Highly respected for his knowledge and understanding of the nation’s forest products industry, Knight is frequently called upon to address forest-related organizations.
